(Carosello Napoletano)
a feature film by Ettore Giannini
with Sophia Loren (Two Women, A Special Day, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Marriage Italian Style), Léonide Massine (The Red Shoes), Paolo Stoppa (Once Upon a Time in the West, Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard), Tina Pica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Bread, Love and Dreams)

The first major Italian musical of the postwar era, the title refers to a family of street singers. The story covers a century or so in the lives of this family, with ample screen time given over to romance and heartbreak, we follow their flight to the sounds of engaging Neapolitan songs and the scenes they describe, of love, violence, war, strife, hope and despair.. Basically an "inventory musical", the film spotlights several well-known Neapolitan tunes, given sprightly performances by the cast. The uncredited voice of famed tenor Beniamino Gigli is heard from time to time for the benefit of his legions of fans.

A bittersweet portrait of Naples and the perseverance of a typical Neapolitan family, presented with taste and lighthearted ease, leaves us tearing, laughing and singing.
