The Last Of The Pope Kings

A film by Luca Manfredi

The Vatican Kingdom (Rome), October 1867. King-Pope Pius IX is deeply shaken by news of a bomb attack that kills twenty-three French soldiers belonging to a detachment of the French army stationed in Rome in his defense during the war for the re-unification of Italy led by General Garibaldi. Countess Flaminia Ricci, the secret mother of young revolutionary Cesare Costa, appeals to a judge of the Holy See, Bishop Colombo da Priverno, to help her saving her son’s life who has been accused of the attack. Monsignor Colombo balks, so she is obliged to tell him he is Cesare’s father, born from their brief love affair twenty years before. Shocked by this revelation, he will do his best to save his son…

The Last of the Pope Kings is about the never ending story of decrepit and blind Power that fights back the signs of changing times,  to be inevitably swept away in the process.  A great production,  shot on location in Rome,  will carry the audience back to the times of the last Pope who ruled as an Emperor.
